Green Lawn Abbey, 700 Greenlawn Ave., Cols. OH. I’ve been waiting for the right time to post about this beautiful piece of Columbus history that nearly goes unnoticed, even when driving 35 mph down towards the massive cemetery at the end of the road. A decade ago, an old boyfriend and I drove up a moonlit path to have a closer look…and were promptly ID’d by the police. Good thing: this amazing structure of granite, marble and stained glass has been vandalized over the years as well as suffered the wear and tear of aging without funding. The Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association has put forth huge amounts of volunteer time and donations in an effort to get the mausoleum back on its fine feet. SUPPORT YOUR HISTORICAL STRUCTURES, COLUMBUS! It’s about pride in where you came from and honoring those who contributed to the arts and industry of Columbus’ past. *Buried within: Thurston the Magician, a contemporary of Harry Houdini. Please stop by and tour the Abbey this Memorial Day Monday, May 30th from 10 am to 2 pm, for tours and a peek at the landscaping plan. The association also opens the doors for themed events during Halloween season, which is particularly atmospheric. www.greenlawnabbey.org
