Okay, so I have no clue what I’m doing with social media, but every once in a while I’m reminded that I’m doing it juuust right…according to my own interests! Being a habitual rabbit chaser, I decided to explore the feed of a recent Twitter follower, and this much I gathered: he was checked in at “Clown Cone”. What the? I had to know what in the world this thing was. Next thing you know I was google mapping it up to north Linden. Waaaay in the back of a strip mall I’ve been thrifting at before (but always kind of zipped in and out of fast) sits Clown Cone & Confections, a family-owned business for three decades. I couldn’t find much information on the place but sure enough, there was an old Dispatch article framed on the wall near a cluster of (gulp) clown dolls. Throughout the ten minutes I spent in the shop, school kids of all ages dropped in for ice cream and old-fashioned candy. And I found my favorite yet elusive Bubblicious flavor—Blue Blowout—so, score, I’ll take five packs. A far cry from the carefully designed, brand savvy ice creamists we are spoiled with today, Clown Cone truly did remind me of a place I’d have visited in Anywhere, America back when I was a kid; when walking to the dime store near Grandma’s house was a real treat. This is a surprisingly bright spot in a community that’s otherwise working towards revitalization.

In addition to the candy and ice cream, there are puzzles and whimsical salt & pepper shakers for sale…hence the quirk factor.
