The Labor Day holiday is all said and done, but pout not; this work week begins one day closer to Friday (yessss). This Saturday, Sept. 8 is Lithopolis Honeyfest, so start planning for that next day trip! It’s hard to believe that the town of Lithopolis is just a 20 minute drive from the city of Columbus, whose skyline is still visible from what seems to be worlds away. You’ll pass through overgrown rural landscapes and beautifully manicured soybean crops to get to this rural town of 600 and arrive to a refreshing lack of sensationalism and a whole lot of American charm. Up the main drag of homes and antique shops, you’ll find a modest stretch of artisans selling products from salves to candles to gourmet honey products and of course…the bee beards are something to see and/or shudder at. Arnold Crabtree a.k.a. “The Bee Man of Lithopolis” raises money yearly for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has been known to go the extra mile and sport a bee wig (omg) if his goals are reached by the date of the Fest. I could go on, but experiencing the town for yourself is worth much more than a full recounting on my part. See you there!
Ooh, but also noteworthy: Columbus’ own Brothers Drake Meadery will be pouring their distinctive honeywine, which is a must-taste! Here is a link to the lineup of activities and map of the grounds. Festivities run from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, Sept. 8th.
